🚌⚠️ KNOW THE DANGER ZONES: STAY SAFE AROUND THE BUS!
As we continue National School Bus Safety Week, the Tishomingo County School District wants to remind students and families about the importance of staying safe when boarding and exiting a school bus.
Did you know that school bus drivers cannot always see students who are standing too close to the bus?
These areas are known as danger zones, and understanding them can help prevent serious accidents.
🚸 Important Safety Reminders:
🚌 Keep a safe distance. Stay at least 10 feet away from the bus whenever possible, unless you are boarding or exiting under the driver's direction.
👀 Make sure the driver can see you. Never assume the driver knows where you are standing.
✋ Wait for the driver's signal. Never approach or cross in front of the bus until the driver indicates it is safe.
🚶 Never walk behind a school bus. Always follow the designated crossing procedures.
🎒 Keep belongings secure. If you drop something near the bus, never attempt to retrieve it without first notifying the driver and receiving instructions.
❤️💙 School bus safety begins before students ever step onto the bus.
Parents and guardians, please take a few moments to review these important safety reminders with your children.

🚌🛑 NATHAN'S LAW: KNOW THE LAW. PROTECT OUR STUDENTS.
As we begin National School Bus Safety Week, the Tishomingo County School District wants to remind our community about the importance of following Mississippi's school bus safety laws.
Mississippi's Nathan's Law was enacted to strengthen protections for students following the tragic death of Nathan Key, a Mississippi student who was struck by a motorist while exiting his school bus.
🚦 What should Mississippi motorists know?
🛑 STOP for school buses. When a school bus displays flashing red lights or an extended stop arm, motorists must stop as required by Mississippi law.
🚗 Keep your distance. Motorists required to stop must remain at least 10 feet away from the school bus.
🛣️ Know the roadway rules. Mississippi law provides an exception for traffic traveling in the opposite direction on certain divided highways with four or more lanes. Drivers should understand the requirements before encountering a stopped school bus.
⚖️ Violations have serious consequences. Illegally passing a stopped school bus can result in substantial fines, possible imprisonment, and additional penalties for repeat offenses.
❤️💙 No destination is more important than a child's safety.
Every driver has a responsibility to protect our students. When you encounter a stopped school bus, remember that a few moments of patience can help prevent a lifetime of heartbreak.

🚌🛑 SCHOOL BUS SAFETY: THEIR SAFETY IS IN YOUR HANDS!
Every school day, our students are counting on us to help keep them safe as they travel to and from school.
The Tishomingo County School District would like to remind all motorists of the importance of staying alert and practicing safe driving habits around school buses and school zones.
🚦 A Few Important Reminders:
🚌 Watch for school buses. Be especially cautious during morning pickup and afternoon drop-off times.
🛑 Respect the stop arm. When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, motorists must stop as required by law.
🚸 Slow down in school zones. Follow posted speed limits and remain alert for students crossing streets or entering roadways.
📵 Eliminate distractions. Keep your attention on the road, especially when children are nearby.
⏰ Be patient. A few extra moments of caution can make all the difference in keeping our students safe.
❤️💙 Every student deserves to arrive at school and return home safely. We ask everyone in our community to do their part by staying alert, following traffic laws, and putting student safety first.💚💛
A Moment of Patience. A Lifetime of Difference.

5th and 6th grade students had exciting and educational morning learning important safety skills through hands-on demonstrations and conversations with local safety professionals!
🌊 Water Safety: Students learned about the proper use of life jackets and what to do if someone needs to be rescued from the water.
🐕 Drug Safety: Students learned about the dangers of taking medication that isn’t prescribed to them and got to see a K9 demonstration showing how these specially trained dogs assist with drug detection.
🚔 Highway Safety: Students experienced a car rollover simulation and learned firsthand why wearing a seatbelt is so important.
🛞 4-Wheeler Safety: Students learned the importance of wearing a helmet, staying off highways, and practicing safe riding habits.
We are incredibly thankful to the Belmont Police Department, Belmont Fire Department, Tishomingo County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mississippi Department of Public Safety, and 4-H for taking the time to set up, visit with our students, and share such valuable safety information.

To bring the lesson to life, students used graham crackers and icing to model how Earth’s tectonic plates move and interact.
